About Us

The main objectives of Worcestershire Racial Equality Council (WREC) are to:
  • Promote racial equality.
  • Bring together individuals of different cultures and racial identities as a collective body.
  • Work towards the elimination of racial discrimination.
  • Promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different racial groups, and communities with different cultures.
  • Develop policy proposal that would influence the decision-making of statutory and voluntary bodies, so that they address the diversity agenda in their service provision and employment strategies.
  • Promote change in public attitudes on matters of race, through programmes of public education, depicting racial equality.
  • In conjunction with the Commission for Racial Equality, ensure compliance with Race Relations Law.
  • Influence statutory, private and other voluntary organisations to be responsive to the needs of the ethnic groups/community sector, and to enhance their participation in regeneration issues.
  • Develop an effective community and voluntary sector voice, spanning issues important to a diverse range of interests.
The Worcester Racial Equality Council was set up in 1989. In 1999 its name was changed to Worcestershire Racial Equality Council to reflect its county-wide brief, in-line with the local government re-organisation.

Worcestershire Racial Equality Council (WREC) is a very specialised constituted institution which enjoys charitable status. There are 7 members of staff of whom two are based in Redditch. WREC’s membership consists of individuals and representatives of organisations who have a genuine interest in racial equality and who wish to make a contribution towards the improvement of relations between people of different backgrounds.
